ROLE OF THE SCHOOL NURSE

It is the goal of every School Nurse to promote health and wellness for each and every student in order to maximize the educational experience.
Some of the responsibilities of the Certified School Nurse include:
First aid and emergency care.
Administration of medication that must be given during school hours.
Hearing screening in grades K, 1,2,3,7 and 11th grades.
Vision screening on every child once per school year.
Growth screening, Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation.
Scoliosis screening on every child in 6th and 7th grade.
Health counseling.
Communicable disease control which includes screening for and excluding from school, children with head lice, ringworm, conjunctivitis, severe colds and flu, chicken pox, and other communicable disease that we may encounter.
Daily, monthly and annual statistical reporting.
Faculty in-services.
Consultation on all children with special health needs.
Child abuse reporting.
Medical referrals.
Maintaining records on all students, this includes physical examinations, immunization records, results of mandated screenings,
all visits to the health office, and emergency contacts.
School Nurses will continue to be proactive and reactive in dealing with the health needs of all students. School Nurses share the goal of all educators in creating an optimal situation for learning.
