Philosophy
The Wissahickon High School Science Department endorses the Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for Science and Technology, the Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology, as well as the National Science Education’s Standards and all they encompass. We believe that a scientifically literate student should understand key concepts and principles that help them explain and predict natural phenomena and events, and understand how scientific knowledge is acquired.
The science learned by Wissahickon students will include but not be limited to:
Use scientific inquiry method to answer questions about and explain natural events and phenomena.
Emphasize and use technology to support scientific literacy.
Use process skills, observing, classifying, inferring, and predicting to design models or predict solutions.
Use problem-solving strategies involving scientific inquiry to solve real world problems and communicate their results.
Use scientific reasoning to make informed decisions.
The goal of the Wissahickon Science Department is to encourage students to use their scientific knowledge to understand the science in their natural world, the resources it provides, and use their knowledge and skills to develop a citizenry that is aware and concerned about their environment.
