Parents, if your child is planning to play ANY school sport in the
2008-2009 school year, please be sure to read the following:
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic
Association that governs school sports, has passed a new rule regarding
physical exams. The rule has two parts
that impact student athletes.
First, in order to play a sport
during the 2008-09 school year, an
athlete must have a physical dated after June 1, 2008. This physical will make the student
eligible to play from June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009. A physical given prior to that time frame
will not be valid. Barring serious
injury or extended absence from school, a parent will certify that a student
can play a 2nd or 3rd sport by completing another form
(Section 5).
Secondly, this change means that a student athlete must have a physical EVERY
year since the physicals are only acceptable for one school year. This may create an issue for families as many
healthcare organizations only provide for one well-child visit every other calendar
year.
To summarize, all student athletes
must have a physical dated after June 1, 2008 in order to participate in any
sport during the 2008-2009 school year.

Dear Parents,
As we approach the 2008-2009
athletic seasons, the Wissahickon Middle and High School Athletic Departments
would like to make you aware of some important changes made by the Pennsylvania
Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) and the PIAA’s Sports’ Medicine
Advisory Committee concerning your child’s pre-participation physical.
The required PIAA physical form is
now known as the Comprehensive Initial Pre-Participation Evaluation or
CIPPE. The
All CIPPE physicals performed in
2007-2008 school year will expire as of May 31, 2008. The PIAA’s previous policy allowed a
student-athlete’s pre-participation physical form to be valid for one calendar
year. However, the PIAA’s current policy
now states initial physical examinations
are valid for one academic year – June 1st – May 31st.
If your son/daughter plans to
participate in interscholastic athletics next year, please understand that no
student-athlete will be allowed to participate in practice or games unless
their CIPPE was performed on or after June 1, and before the first day of
practice. The Wissahickon Athletic
Directors understand the confusion and inconvenience this may cause some
families. However, we must follow all
rules and regulations governed by the PIAA.
Please go to www.piaa.org or call your school’s athletic
department with any questions or concerns.
